Tips to revive your lawn after winter

At this point in the year, our lawns can look a bit worse for wear. While spring is on the horizon, we’re not out of the woods just yet.

The thought of how to revive your lawn after winter may seem daunting, but don’t worry – there are some simple ways to repair your lawn after the winter period to give it a head start for the spring.

Preparation is key to reviving your lawn

Servicing your lawnmower during winter will ensure it’s ready for the first mow of the season. Chipped or blunt blades will damage the grass, and you could end up with more problems than when you started. You can also follow our Frozen lawn tips guide to help you minimise any damage caused to your lawn in winter and give it the best chance of revival in spring.

Brush away the mess to revive your lawn after winter

When temperatures have dropped and your beloved lawnmower is stored safely away, lawn care can slip a bit - and naturally so. While we can’t carry out our normal spring/summer garden routines, there are a few things to keep on top of to ensure the spring transition comes easily. Debris and leaves can build up on your lawn over time, and if left behind, they can start to cause problems. If they are left to linger, your lawn will struggle to breathe, and moisture can build up and cause fungal growth on your lawn. Set aside time each week to quickly clear away any unwanted build-ups, and it will help your lawn massively coming into spring.

Let your lawn breathe

When debris and leaves have been removed from your lawn surface, it’s time to aerate. Aerating your lawn is a simple yet effective way to rejuvenate your lawn after winter and help to alleviate some of the pressures on your lawn. Doing this will help your lawn to breathe and improve the drainage so that a waterlogged lawn is less likely when the spring showers come around.

All you need to do is a garden fork! Start by pushing the garden fork into your soil surface, giving it a wiggle back and forward, and repeat the process across your entire lawn. By creating these holes, you will make pockets of air in the soil that will allow nutrients to freely flow down to the roots.

Lawn diseases

As much as we try to avoid them, lawn diseases are very common and will pop their heads up occasionally, especially during and after winter. Rain, sleet, and snow can all play a leading role in your winter lawn troubles. Snow mould and red thread are the most common diseases that your lawn will face during the winter, but luckily, they are easy to treat and shouldn’t cause any lasting damage to your lawn if dealt with correctly.

Fix bare patches to revive your lawn after winter

Once the fallen leaves have blown away after a stormy spell, you might notice a few bare batches on your lawn. After carefully maintaining your lawn during the previous spring and summer, this can be disheartening to see. Fear not, a simple overseeding and your lawn will be ready to go. We recommend holding off on this step until March, when temperatures are consistently reaching 10 degrees, and you will yield the best results.

Prevention, prevention, prevention!

As with most things, prevention is the greatest tool. Although some things are unavoidable, there are ways to minimise damage and have your lawn in tip-top shape all year round.

Maintaining a healthy lawn is the key to this. A good feed in spring and autumn will help give your lawn the nutrients it needs to see off any challenges that present themselves throughout the year. Taking the time to choose the right lawn food and knowing when and how to apply it throughout the year will make a huge difference and help you maintain a healthy lawn all year round!
